Hence, one of the names for this place was los chorritos (which translates to the little streams). <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We don't know if the diminutive came from affection \u2013in Mexico we use diminutives for things we care for\u2013 or because the water flowed slowly.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What we do know is that people used to pass by with jugs to fill them with spring water, which they would then take back home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The spring gave a second name to this place, as around the spring, a grass called \u2018par\u00e1n\u2019 grew, which is where the name \u2018paranera\u2019 comes from. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at La Paranera<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the contrary, it was the daily life of that time that baptized us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By the mid-20th century, the comalteco Samuel Fuentes Salazar, and his wife Engracia G\u00f3mez Guerrero from Tolim\u00e1n, Jalisco, became the custodians of this land, bringing more life to the orchard by planting some of the most productive species in the region: mamey, guam\u00fachil, coconut palm, guava, mango, soursop, and coffee, primarily. Don Samuel enjoyed spending his afternoons maintaining the fruit trees, as nature was always one of the spaces he loved the most.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seeing the orchards today makes us think that it has always been a place of natural beauty. Walking on the leaf litter, appreciating the trees from the roots, contemplating their bark, and reaching the tops with our gaze gives us perspective, the kind we often need. When the foliage up there is abundant, the wind gives us a spectacle for the eyes and ears. Later in the year, when the leaves are gone, those treetops take on flavor by becoming delicious fruits... who wouldn't find beauty in such a place?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As if that weren't enough, listening to the birds converse from one tree to another regardless of the distance will always be amazing; even more so if they let themselves be seen among the leaves, which happens often. Parakeets, owls, and woodpeckers are some of the species you are sure to find walking around here.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But not everything happens up there. It is a joy to see the squirrels running around, the iguanas sunbathing, and finding burrows here and there; it seems like a minefield of life! We consider ourselves very fortunate to have the opportunity to get to know the fauna of our region so closely.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the aim of preserving biodiversity in this region, on June 23, 1988, a decree was issued declaring 'Las Huertas de Comala' as a protected natural reserve, because \u2013as we\u2019ve mentioned before\u2013 its climate is home to a variety of flora and fauna species that constitute a truly unique ecosystem in our region. We feel fortunate to be part of the 412 acres of the reserve, also considered the lung of the northern zone of the state of Colima.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Towards the end of the century, La Paranera was inherited by the eldest daughter of the Fuentes G\u00f3mez family, Mrs. Nely, who, motivated by the beauty of the space, along with her husband, built a house to enjoy weekends with their 3 children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some years later, they decided to turn that space into their permanent residence, for which they asked architect Juan Castillo to design a proposal that would adapt to the environment and \u2013above all\u2013 comply with the guidelines established for building in the middle of the reserve.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The house was built in the center of the property and initially had a central courtyard, a couple of terraces, a living room, a kitchen, four bedrooms, and a swimming pool. The design of the property carries Mrs. Nely's talent, who has always enjoyed the beauty of spaces and is fond of attention to detail. These have made the house something special ever since. The fountain, for example, has some ceramic tiles with spring flowers, an icon for the colimotes (Colima natives), because around February and March, the city gets dressed in bright yellow with the heaps of spring flowers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you can see, the orchard received much love during all this time. The family took care of the place, always seeking to see the fruits of those trees planted by the previous generation. With stones, they formed a path that remains to this day, and that runs through La Paranera in a circuit, passing by the spring that \u2013it is worth noting\u2013 today no longer sees water flowing as it did back in the early 1900s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The family continued to grow, and each of the children left the maternal home, the parents became grandparents, and eventually \u2013after 15 years of living in La Paranera\u2013 the Orozco Fuentes family decided to move from there to live in a smaller and less demanding house, as maintaining the orchard became a very heavy task for two.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is how the house <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at La Paranera<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> became inhabited.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Little by little, months began to pass. Nature grew immeasurably; this tropical climate, life multiplies rapidly. On reaching a year of abandonment, the Orozco Fuentes siblings returned to visit the property.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With sadness, Jesus, Nely, and Juan Carlos realized that the house that was once their home would soon disappear among branches and roots, after having given them so much. It was at that moment when they began to envision <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at La Paranera<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a hospitality project. They wanted to attract travelers to live the endearing experience they enjoyed so much, sleeping surrounded by old trees in the middle of a natural reserve.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project sounded amazing, but also quite complex. By this time, each of them had other occupations and responsibilities, so finding a way would mean a significant challenge in their lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, they went ahead, as the affection they have for this property has always been great and has only grown over time. After all, to this day, four generations have enjoyed countless afternoons at the gardens.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The house had to be turned into a hotel, what a challenge! An environmental impact assessment was elaborated to comply with the requirements of preserving the habitat and impacting it as little as possible. During the renovation by architect Matia Di Frenna, two more rooms were built, some spaces were optimized, and La Paranera Hotel &amp; Relax was given an identity by graphic designer Joel Rojas. Among the modifications proposed by the architect are the brick headboards, an icon with which we identify, and that we transferred conceptually to the headboards of the bedrooms in our second property, Casa Paranera, which we will tell you more about in another post.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With great joy, we opened our doors in January 2021, hand in hand with our beloved restaurant Cuaxiote, as we could not have created a home without a heart, the kitchen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the opening, our history has diversified into hundreds of moments in the lives of our guests, our diners, and of all those who pay us a visit. Lo que s\u00ed sabemos es que la gente sol\u00eda pasar con c\u00e1ntaros para llenarlos con agua del manantial, misma que llevaban de vuelta a sus casas. \u00a0 El ojo de agua le dio un segundo nombre a este lugar, y es que alrededor del nacimiento, crec\u00eda una hierba llamada par\u00e1n, que es de donde viene la paranera, no vayan a creer que este nombre tan hermoso fue idea de nosotros; al contrario, fue la vida cotidiana de aqu\u00e9l momento la que nos bautiz\u00f3. \u00a0 Para mediados del siglo XX, el comalteco don Samuel Fuentes Salazar y su esposa Engracia G\u00f3mez Guerrero oriunda de Tolim\u00e1n, Jalisco, se convirtieron en custodios de este terreno, dando mayor vida a la huerta sembrando algunas de las especies m\u00e1s productivas de la regi\u00f3n: mamey, guam\u00fachil, palma de coco, guayaba, mango, guan\u00e1bana y cafeto, principalmente. Don Samuel disfrutaba de pasar las tardes dando mantenimiento a los \u00e1rboles frutales, pues la naturaleza fue siempre uno de los espacios que m\u00e1s am\u00f3.\u00a0 \u00a0 Ver las huertas el d\u00eda de hoy nos hace pensar que siempre fue un lugar de belleza natural. Caminar sobre la hojarasca apreciando los \u00e1rboles desde la ra\u00edz, contemplando sus cortezas y llegando a las copas con la mirada, nos da una perspectiva de las que a menudo hacen falta. Cuando el follaje all\u00e1 arriba es abundante, el viento nos regala un espect\u00e1culo a la vista y al o\u00eddo. M\u00e1s adelante en el a\u00f1o, cuando las hojas se han ido, esas copas toman forma de sabor con sus frutas deliciosas\u2026 \u00bfqui\u00e9n no encontrar\u00eda belleza al andar por aqu\u00ed?\u00a0 \u00a0 Por si fuera poco, escuchar a las aves conversar de un \u00e1rbol a otro sin importar la distancia, siempre ser\u00e1 asombroso; m\u00e1s si se dejan ver de entre las hojas. Pericos, b\u00fahos y p\u00e1jaros carpinteros son algunas de las especies que seguro encontrar\u00e1s andando por aqu\u00ed.\u00a0 \u00a0 Pero no todo sucede all\u00e1 arriba. Es un disfrute ver a las ardillas corretearse, a las iguanas tomar el sol y encontrar las madrigueras aqu\u00ed y all\u00e1, \u00a1parece un campo minado de vida! Nos parece muy afortunado tener la oportunidad de conocer la fauna de nuestra regi\u00f3n tan de cerca.\u00a0 \u00a0 Con el objetivo de preservar la biodiversidad en esta regi\u00f3n, el 23 de junio de 1988 se emiti\u00f3 un decreto que declara a \u2018Las Huertas de Comala\u2019 como \u00c1rea Natural Protegida, pues \u2013como ya les contamos\u2013 su clima aloja una variedad de especies de flora y fauna que constituyen un ecosistema verdaderamente \u00fanico en nuestra regi\u00f3n. Nos sentimos afortunados de formar parte de las 167 hect\u00e1reas de la reserva, consideradas tambi\u00e9n como el pulm\u00f3n de la zona norte del estado de Colima.\u00a0 \u00a0 A finales del siglo, La Paranera es heredada a la hija mayor de la familia Fuentes G\u00f3mez, la se\u00f1ora Nely, quien motivada por la belleza del espacio, finca junto con su esposo una casa para disfrutar los fines de semana en compa\u00f1\u00eda de sus 3 hijos. \u00a0 Algunos a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s, deciden convertir ese espacio en su residencia permanente, para lo cual le piden al arquitecto Juan Castillo el dise\u00f1o de una propuesta arquitect\u00f3nica que se adecuara al entorno y que \u2013sobre todo\u2013 cumpliera los lineamientos establecidos para fincar en medio de la reserva.\u00a0 La casa fue construida al centro de la propiedad, y ten\u00eda inicialmente un patio central, un par de terrazas, una sala, una cocina, cuatro habitaciones y una alberca. El dise\u00f1o de la propiedad lleva el talento de la se\u00f1ora Nely, quien siempre ha disfrutado de la belleza de los espacios y de la atenci\u00f3n al detalle. Estos hacen de la casa algo especial desde entonces. La fuente \u2013por ejemplo\u2013 tiene algunos azulejos de cer\u00e1mica con flor de primavera. Un \u00edcono para quienes viven en Colima, pues por ah\u00ed de febrero y marzo, la ciudad se viste de amarillo brillante con los montones de racimos de las primaveras.\u00a0 \u00a0 Como ver\u00e1n, la huerta recibi\u00f3 muchos cari\u00f1os durante todo este tiempo. La familia se encarg\u00f3 de continuar con los cuidados para seguir viendo los frutos de aquellos \u00e1rboles que plant\u00f3 la generaci\u00f3n anterior. Con piedras, formaron un sendero que prevalece hasta el d\u00eda de hoy, y que recorre La Paranera en un circuito perimetral, pasando por el manantial que \u2013cabe destacar\u2013 hoy d\u00eda ya no ve agua correr como brotaba en aquellos a\u00f1os. \u00a0 La familia continu\u00f3 creciendo y cada uno de los hijos fue dejando la casa materna, los padres se convirtieron en abuelos y eventualmente \u2013despu\u00e9s de 15 a\u00f1os de vivir en La Paranera\u2013 la familia Orozco Fuentes decidi\u00f3 mudarse de ah\u00ed para habitar una casa m\u00e1s peque\u00f1a y menos demandante, pues mantener el huerto se convirti\u00f3 en una tarea muy pesada para dos. Fue as\u00ed como la casa de la paranera se qued\u00f3 sola. \u00a0 Poco a poco empezaron a pasar los meses. La naturaleza fue creciendo sin mesura, y es que en este clima tan tropical, la vida se multiplica a paso veloz. Al cumplir un a\u00f1o en el abandono, los hermanos Orozco Fuentes volvieron a visitar la propiedad. \u00a0 Con tristeza, Jes\u00fas, Nely y Juan Carlos se dieron cuenta de que la casa que alguna vez fue su hogar, pronto desaparecer\u00eda entre ramas y ra\u00edces, despu\u00e9s de haberles dado tanto. En ese momento fue que comenzaron a dibujar a la paranera como un proyecto de hospitalidad.
